WHAT GIVES YOU THE BOXING

The ascents and descents of the life of legendary boxer trapped in a sculpture
CYNTHIA REASON - 22 Feb. 2007

By
as intricate as it represents the very life of this man, the bronze bust of the Canadian boxer George Chuvalo created by Gabrielle Fischer Horvath, is a mix of history, tragedy and expertise. " His life is in this sculpture " Fischer Horvath said when unveiling the work last Monday in Bloor Street Boxing and Fitness. " His strength is recreated in it, yet it also symbolizes her tragic life, in pieces and reassembled pieces." In his 93 professional fights between 1956 and 1979, Chuvalo not even once touched the canvas, he spent 21 of his 23 years as a champion boxer Canadian heavyweights. But that strength, that the boxer Muhammad Ali once described as the "hardest man ever faced ," recently had to face his toughest tests when Chuvalo retired from the rings. As he himself described as his own holocaust, Chuvalo has lost three of his five children and his first wife because of drugs. The dark history of his family, has Chuvalo, is what has moved in its crusade to sensitize young people about the pitfalls of drugs, offering children the best example. " I do not try to sugarcoat anything that relates to them ," says Chuvalo to speak to high schools across the country, on tour named Fight Against Drugs (video) . " I talk about (the physical reaction) of my children to watch only heroin when they were in the throes of drug needed so desperately. " First it was his son Jesse, who became addicted to heroin in 1984 and a year later found dead of a gun shot auto shot. He was 20 years. Then followed Georgie Lee, who, after a long struggle with heroin and an extension of the term of his sentence in jail for robbing a pharmacy, died of a heroin overdose four weeks after being released from prison in 1993. This was 30 years. His wife Lynn was found dead of a prescription drug overdose two days after his funeral. Then came Stevens, 35, who had become a centerpiece in the agenda of anti-drug conference Chuvalo. " At the beginning of the talks show a video, and it boys see Steven - and gives the feeling that it will achieve. It's a good looking guy, very charming and one comes to believe in what he says when he says that going to beat drugs, "says Chuvalo." Then when the video ends, I tell you that Steven, the well, died from an overdose of heroin. And every time the same thing, is how are audible gasp. "And the shock of that reaction ," said Chuvalo, " which has the effect of a preventive remedy " in boys, who are who are at risk. " I never imagined that I would end up doing this," says "for my family, I do because I do . "Chuvalo's tenacity both within and outside the ring, is what has made it an attractive model to be sculpted, Fischer says Horvath. As he is, the bronze is everlasting." Boxers never stop, continue to that fall, "says Fischer," but George still continues to fight hard and has not been delivered despite the beatings . "Today, Fischer Horvath is looking for an organization that offers, or make a auction Chuvalo bronze sculpture to raise money for the organization Fight Against Drugs , or someone who is interested in acquiring Chuvalo representation for use as a commemorative piece in a public place. Best jaws history (ESPN)

A well-placed hand hurts anyone, but these ten giants, a punch in the jaw is less painful than throwing them in a grape. Houston Graham explains why

Graham Huston, To ESPN
4. No list of the best chins would be complete, from my point of view, without a mention of the grueling Canadian heavyweight George Chuvalo, who lost on points to Muhammad Ali twice and never fell to the canvas in 93 fights (when he stopped the fight with Joe Frazier, Chuvalo had a fractured cheekbone, and he stood in his overwhelming defeat by George Foreman). Chuvalo beat the very hard-hitting Jerry Quarry in a war of seven rounds.

During an interview for Boxing Monthly in 1998, Chuvalo told me that although he was known mostly for putting up great shock, I felt that it could also box a little. "If I had been beaten with a tenth of the blows which awarded me, at this time could not even talk to you" he said. "I always said, 'On a good night, I could beat anyone." Perhaps if they had been fighting 100 rounds had done "
