UN Secretary-General's Message on World Day of Remembrance for victims of traffic accidents 21/nov
Fonte: Press ISEV

On World Day of Remembrance for victims of accidents Traffic mourn the death of 1.3 million people estimated to die in the streets and highways of the world every year and renew our determination to prevent further deaths occur.
Many tragedies can be prevented by applying a set of simple measures of proven effectiveness, benefiting not only individuals and families but also society in general.
Every time there is a greater recognition of the pressing problem posed by deaths and injuries from traffic accidents for the development and public health. This increased awareness has prompted governments and their partners to respond more quickly. This year, the General Assembly proclaimed the first United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety "in history, offering an opportunity to take global action.
I appeal to Member States, international organizations, civil society organizations and business and community leaders to ensure that the Decade will lead to the achievement of real improvements. As a step in that direction, governments should publish their plans for the Decade, as it starts around the world, May 11, 2011.
The Collaborative Group of the United Nations road safety will soon publish its global plan for the Decade, which calls for measures to improve safety of roads and vehicles, the behavior of drivers and pedestrians and emergency services.
For my part, I issued a directive to all United Nations personnel in which ordered the drivers of the Organization to comply with certain road safety measures, including, used seat belts, respect speed limits refrain from using cell phones and avoid other distractions.
If everyone adopted these and other simple measures can make the observance of this Day be meaningful, thus honoring the memory of the victims as best as possible, ie, behaviors aimed at saving the lives of others.
